Echoes From a Distant Place

Curator of the event and exhibition Echoes From a Distant Place (BE) Brussels

The space created by artists Aaron Godfroid, Anna Mathot and Lau Kaker is resonating with the musical universe of Root Mean Square. The collective exhibition proposes to encounter and experiment with different mediums, as well as a constant movement between creating soundscapes and visual environments.

They are inviting you to this changing and familiar place, an echo coming from rivers, its inhabitants and from other times. Working directly with local water (Meuse, La Senne and the Baltic Sea), they are experiencing different ways of creating images where water and the processes become visible. The techniques are taking roots in analog photography, sun printing, papermaking and painting.

ANNA MATHOT is an interdisciplinary Belgian artist, graduating with a Master from Erg Brussels in 2023. Her work is exploring painting, 3D digital animation, performance, writing, as well as the creation of soundscapes. She focuses on interspecies relationships, highlighting and questioning the concepts of human and non-human. Her painting gestures are polyphonic and her artwork to be considered as an ecosystem. She is playing with codes of the medium and beginning with a need for connection. Alongside, she organises collective visual experiences.

AARON GODFROID is a Belgian artistic photographer from Namur. In the nality of his bachelor’s degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, he is inspired by a classic approach to photography by drawing inspiration from the composition and narration of the «New Topographics», a collective that has changed the approach to landscape photography. The artist is interested in photography as an anchor point for a vision of the world at a given moment, the sociological approach to it and archival work. Of those who see, the photographer decides to be the one who remembers.
