KAMMARI (CY)

March-April 2022 - as demarcate collaboration

At the Kammari Residency in Cyprus, we worked with the plant bodies growing in the mountains of Treis Elies. Our experiments were around local dyeing and weaving techniques with recycled textiles, influenced through participating in workshops given by local artists. The garments are taking multiple forms of care, working with the ephemerality and movement of natural cycles. If you want it... or knot are exercises to fuse back into plant processes and colouring. Times of olive leaves, rosemary, and pomegranates integrating into fibres, grinding pigments revealing the colour palette of the mountains. This research was also a time to reflect on non-native plants, their colonisation and movements linked to the history of the island.

The performativity of our work is thought in response to the Cypriot region, craft making, as well as its motifs. With the short performances holding each other, the interdependent relationship is visualised holding violence and care. Calmess, efficiency and power are bound together as a result of the human world trying to relate with the plant universus. The church in the village had white thread binding through its roof to reconcile the people. Binding us with the dyed thread and costumes in our performances, we bond. The clothing made with the plants help us reclaim our personal space, acting as a protective extension of our bodies.
