MUSTARINDA (FI)
November 2022
At Mustarinda Residency, Lau focused on water use and mushroom dyes made without adding substances that couldn’t go back into the local environment. Local mushrooms were collected from the Helsinki area in September and October 2022.
The project works with locality and upcycling (fabrics including wool, cotton and silk) taking roots in cultural patterns and Finnish forests. The coloured wool and cotton are assembled inspired by Kainuu patterns forming traditional rugs (sienimatto). The research process was shared during a talk at the Open House and will further be deepened through the collective writing of their thesis, reflecting on the textile industry.
During November, a collaboration grew with the Performer Heidi Miikki, working together on the question of home and integrating into the forest. Costumes were designed using dead lichen, bark pieces, mushrooms and decomposable materials, breaking and changing following her movements.
